Contemporary Family Residence in Sydney

Constructed by Corben Architects, this family home is a three -storey building with four bedrooms that is sited on a battle axe block. Located in Sydney, Australia, the Mosman House is north facing residence that is designed to get optimum advantage of spectacular water views and also aimed to provide enough privacy for the owners and family. The house was actually a small older style single level house that was innovatively renovated into a contemporary open house that is created to adhere to local approving authority’s view sharing policy. A timber battened garage door and entry gate are used to conceal this private residence. Once you enter the site, you’ll see one enters to the building and goes through the landscaped garden from the gate to the front door. The outstanding panoramic water views can be fully enjoyed from the open plan living/dining/kitchen area. The living area is concealed with a large sliding windows and high ceiling that could make the house perfectly integrate to the site. The middle level of the house is used for the main entry, two living rooms and guest wing, while the upper level is designed for three bedrooms with one luxury suite. There are also a large media room and store areas in the lower level. The residence is designed in simple rectilinear form of concrete and masonry construction that is complemented with timber battening and sandstone cladding in order to create a modern home with natural materials. Meanwhile the interior is finished with American Oak timber floors for the living room, Grey Limestone honed stone floors for the circulation areas, Walnut veneered joinery, Quartz kitchen bench tops, white polyurethane cupboards and Marble slabs in the bathroom. The construction materials for the exterior and interior are aimed to present warm and cozy modern family home. In order to complement the house with green technology, the architect install energy saving options like an operable skylight over the central core that act as ventilation, timber slated screens provide sun control, concrete floors and roof are designed to give thermal mass and Energy Efficient glazing to the external windows and doors. As an addition, the house is also provided with a rainwater harvesting system comprising of 30,000L rainwater tank that is utilized for garden irrigation and flushing of toilets.
